New Performance and Exterior Features
Volkswagen made a significant change to the powertrain. The 2023 VW Atlas had two powertrain options – a 3.6L V6 engine with 276 horsepower and a turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine with 235 horsepower. The automaker is simplifying the choices by equipping the 2024 Atlas with a turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder with 269 horsepower and 273 lb-ft of torque. Even with the engine change, the Volkswagen Atlas towing capacity is 5,000 pounds. The Atlas comes with an eight-speed automatic transmission and front-wheel drive, and VW offers available all-wheel drive. When equipped with 4Motion AWD, the Volkswagen Atlas gas mileage is an EPA-estimated 19/25 MPG.
New exterior features on the Atlas include a redesigned front grille with a new front fascia and headlights. Volkswagen also added new wheel options, including 21-inch wheels for the sporty SEL Premium R-Line trim.
Updated Styling and Technology in the Cabin
The 2024 Volkswagen Atlas interior also has impressive updates. Volkswagen removed many of the hard plastics in the previous generation, replacing them with soft-touch materials and stitched leather accents. The top trim levels like the Peak Edition SEL and SEL Premium R Line have quilted leather upholstery and accents made of wood, brushed metal, and carbon fiber.
Drivers can configure the 2024 Atlas second-row seats with a three-person bench or a pair of captain’s chairs. The third row has enough space for two adults.
Volkswagen also updated the interior technology. The intuitive infotainment system is in a 12.0-inch touchscreen, which compliments the 10.3-inch digital gauge cluster. The new screens have menus that remove the need for physical buttons and dials. Drivers even control the sunroof with a touchscreen slider.
